Discover one of Rocky Mountain National Park’s most spectacular and seldom-guided ascents — Mt. Pagoda via the Crescent Ridge — with the expert team at American Mountain School. Standing at 13,497 ft, Pagoda is the 7th highest summit in RMNP, and its sweeping southern ridgeline offers a true alpine experience on high-quality granite far from the crowds. This is not your average guided Colorado 13er — it’s a full mountain day combining long cross-country approach, technical ridge climbing, and breathtaking summit views over Longs Peak, Chiefs Head, and the Wild Basin wilderness.
Whether you’re building toward bigger objectives or simply want to experience RMNP’s alpine terrain at its finest, this guided ascent delivers an unforgettable journey with certified professionals by your side.
EXCELLENT Based on 26 reviews Posted on Nick T (Nick)Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We booked the 2-day advanced multipitch rock climbing course with Alex Gukov during our Colorado rock climbing trip. We already had plenty of sport climbing experience and wanted to take our climbing to bigger rock faces, multipitch routes, and learn efficient rappelling. Alex taught us plenty of anchor building techniques and rappelling techniques. We were able to apply and practice the principles immediately to climb multipitch! The course of highly worth it and made our climbing trip so much more meaningful. He is very experienced and knowledgeable, plus he shared plenty of Epic mountaineering stories. Would be glad to learn more from Alex in the future! Thanks Alex!!!!Posted on Hidenori TakahashiTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I traveled to Denver from Japan for a business trip and hoped to climb one of Colorado’s 14ers while I was there. After searching online, I found American Mountain School and was very lucky to be guided by Alex. Because I had not climbed on snow for quite a long time, and because my equipment was not fully adequate for the conditions, I was honestly a little anxious. However, thanks to Alex’s great experience, calm judgment, and thoughtful support, I was able to reach the summit safely and return without problems. Climbing at an altitude that we do not have in Japan, with some remaining snow, became one of the best memories of my trip. Thank you very much, Alex.Posted on Jacob TrentmanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Alex was a great instructor for crevasse rescue/ safety. I would recommend. Thanks Alex!Posted on Justin LeopoldTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. TLDR; Great experience. My friend Jim and I hired Alex to take us out for a Lead Ice Climbing class. Alex was very friendly, easy to learn from, and had tons of great tips and tricks from years of high end mountain climbing in the greater. Jim and I got a lot of practice placing screws as well as building anchors and v-threads. We left really pleased and stoked. I would recommend Alex and AMS for any skills you need for you future adventures!Posted on Jim LachTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Everything I wanted in an ice lead class. The automatic emails and the website need some work, but that's near irrelevant to the instruction and material covered in session.Posted on CeciTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had an amazing experience with American Mountain School during my ice climbing class. My instructor, Alexander, was excellent — very knowledgeable, confident, and incredibly patient, which immediately made me feel more comfortable and confident myself. As someone who is just getting into mountaineering and has a mountaineering course coming up soon, this class was very eye-opening. Alexander not only made the experience fun and safe, but he also took the time to share helpful advice and equipment suggestions for my future training. I really appreciated how willing he was to help even beyond the class itself — you can truly tell he loves what he does. I’m from South Texas where everything is flat, so Colorado and ice climbing were completely new to me. I was slower on the approach, but Alexander was patient and encouraging the entire time. Thanks to his guidance, I built the confidence to climb and made it all the way to the top — something I honestly didn’t think I could do at first. I would absolutely book another class with him in the future and highly recommend both Alexander and American Mountain School to anyone looking to learn or build confidence in the mountains.Posted on SimonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Alek was a great instructor for my time with him, he showed plenty of patience and flexibility for my situation and learning aims. I really appreciated how he checked my understanding throughout our sessions and made sure I had a comprehensive understanding of the techniques he shared with me. He shows a rare combination of real professionalism as both a guide and instructor and genuine care for his clients to have the best and most personalised experience they can have.Posted on Corey JudkinsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. A group of 4 of us, with varying experience, booked Alex for ice climbing. Alex has so much experience and knowledge to share. He was patient and truly wanted us to have the best experience. I would definitely recommend him for whatever experience you are going for and would book again for my next adventure!Posted on Jennifer MillerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I highly recommend the Intro to Mountaineering course! I researched many options before deciding on American Mountain School. Other courses only offer two days but American Mountain School's three day course was the perfect amount of time--two days to learn skills and one day to put it all into practice. Aleks was very attentive to the individual needs of his students. We had different backgrounds and skill levels but he accommodated everyone equally. My fingers and toes get very cold so Aleks made sure I had the best gear to keep me warm in the snow and wind. I look forward to more courses and perhaps an expedition with American Mountain School! Aleks is the real deal!Posted on Ryder McmullinTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Took the intro to mountaineering class, very inspiring and instructive. Alex is an amazing guide and a great dude

Your adventure begins well before sunrise at the Sandbeach Lake Trailhead in Wild Basin. The 4.5-mile trail to Sandbeach Lake winds through stunning forest, with the dramatic silhouette of Pagoda slowly revealing itself as you gain elevation. From the lake, the route transitions to cross-country terrain — a hallmark of true alpine climbing — as you navigate boulder fields, forest paths, and open meadows toward the base of Crescent Ridge (also known as the South Ridge or “The Scythe”).
At the base of the ridge, roped climbing begins. Three to four pitches of clean, featured granite lead you up the lower buttress, with climbing up to 5.6 near the crux. Above the roped section, several hundred feet of engaging 3rd and 4th class scrambling take you along the ridge crest to an upper headwall, which is bypassed via an exposed ramp on the left. A final stretch of talus delivers you to the summit of Mt. Pagoda — one of RMNP’s most rewarding and least-crowded high points.
From the top, soak in views of Longs Peak, the Palisades, Chiefs Head, and the vast expanse of Wild Basin stretching out below. Descent follows the Northeast Ridge to the Pagoda-Longs Col, then down the South Gully and back via the approach trail.

The Mt. Pagoda Crescent Ridge is an ideal objective for climbers who have solid hiking fitness and some experience on technical terrain — or strong climbers looking to experience genuine RMNP alpine routes beyond the standard 14er crowds. Prior rock climbing experience is helpful but not required; your guide will coach you through all technical sections.
This is not a casual hike. The approach is long and largely cross-country, and the roped pitches require full commitment. It is, however, one of the most rewarding guided Colorado 13er experiences available in the park.
Prior rock climbing experience is required for this route. The Crescent Ridge involves roped pitches on granite up to 5.6 and sustained exposed scrambling — you should be comfortable on technical terrain before joining this climb. If you’re building toward this level, ask us about our rock climbing courses and intro alpine programs that can help you get there.
We provide all essential group safety gear as well as a helmet and harness if you don’t have your own. You’ll need to bring a daypack, headlamp, layers, rain shell, food, water, and trekking poles. A full gear list is provided upon booking. If you have questions about specific items, our team is happy to advise.
Plan for a full mountain day of approximately 12–14 hours car-to-car. An early start around 4:30–5:00 am from Wild Basin Trailhead is standard to maximize stable weather conditions on the upper ridge and summit.
Yes, the Crescent Ridge involves 3–4 pitches of roped climbing on granite up to 5.6, followed by sustained 3rd and 4th class scrambling to the summit. The crux is a short but committing section on the lower buttress. Above the roped section, the route remains exposed but manageable with good footwork and guidance from your guide.
This climb is offered as a maximum 2-person private guided ascent. The remote approach, technical ridge, and cross-country navigation make it best suited to a small, focused team. This also means you get the full, undivided attention of your IFMGA-certified guide for the entire day.
Your guide monitors forecasts closely in the days leading up to your climb and on the morning of your departure. If conditions are unsafe, we will reschedule your trip. Safety is always the priority — no summit is worth the risk of being caught in a lightning storm on an exposed granite ridge. We will work with you to find the best available alternative date.
