Dragon’s Tail Couloir, located in the heart of Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), is a highly regarded climb among enthusiasts of alpine ascents. Standing at an elevation of approximately 11,000 feet, this couloir offers an exciting mix of moderate snow climbing and breathtaking scenery, making it a perfect choice for climbers seeking a rewarding day in the mountains.
Dragon’s Tail Couloir is the first of two couloirs on the south face of Flattop Mountain, above Emerald Lake.

The snow conditions can vary depending on the time of year, so climbers must be prepared for a range of scenarios. Snow possible up to 50 degrees. At the top the couloir splits into two. There are some rocky steps on the left side that may or may not be covered in ice. On the right side there is a large, scary, but stable cornice hanging over. 1,600 feet of fun snow climbing takes you to the top of Mt. Flattop, which offers incredible views of the park. This area is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, with towering granite cliffs and expansive alpine vistas.
Climbing Techniques:
While the climb is classified as moderate, it still demands a good understanding of snow climbing techniques, including the use of crampons and ice axes.
