About the Flatirons
The Flatirons are a series of striking rock formations located in City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks. This area includes popular and classic crags such as the First Flatiron and Third Flatiron, Gregory Canyon Amphitheater, all the way to and including Skunk Canyon in the south. These iconic sandstone slabs are a prominent feature of the Boulder skyline and offer some of the best climbing opportunities in the region. Known for their unique geology, rich history, and diverse climbing routes, the Flatirons attract climbers of all skill levels from around the world.
Geology
The Flatirons are composed primarily of sandstone, formed during the Pennsylvanian period over 300 million years ago. The rock formations have been shaped by millions of years of geological activity, including sedimentation, uplift, and erosion, resulting in their characteristic slanted, slab-like appearance. The distinct reddish-brown color of the sandstone is due to the iron oxide content, adding to the visual appeal of these majestic formations.

The Flatirons have a long and storied history, both geologically and culturally. The area has been a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts since the late 19th century, with early climbers exploring the routes and establishing many of the classic lines still enjoyed today. The Flatirons were named by early settlers who thought the formations resembled flat, metal irons used for pressing clothes.
