Alex took great care of me. I intended to quit before starting because I was suffering from the altitude. Alex gave me encouragement and brought me to the top of Longs Peak. At 68 years old, I must have been a lot to handle, but he was very careful and understanding giving me lots of breaks along the way. Recommend his services greatly.Posted on Google![]()

I honestly can’t put into words how grateful I am for Alex. His professionalism, patience, kindness, and support made all the difference. This was my first real mountaineering experience, and to be honest, I was far from being in the best shape of my life. Nothing humbles you quite like the mountains. I struggled, especially on summit day. The weather was brutal, the conditions were challenging, and there were many moments when I wanted to stop and turn around. But Alex’s calm professionalism, experience, and steady encouragement kept me moving forward one step at a time. Despite the odds, we made it to the summit of Mount Baker, and without Alex, I would not have been standing there. What I gained from this climb was much more than reaching a summit. It gave me confidence in myself and showed me that I am capable of more than I thought possible. That is a gift I will carry with me for a very long time. I will always be grateful to you Aleksandr for helping make this experience possible. I cannot recommend him highly enough, and I’m already looking forward to future ascents together.Posted on Google![]()

We booked the 2-day advanced multipitch rock climbing course with Alex Gukov during our Colorado rock climbing trip. We already had plenty of sport climbing experience and wanted to take our climbing to bigger rock faces, multipitch routes, and learn efficient rappelling. Alex taught us plenty of anchor building techniques and rappelling techniques. We were able to apply and practice the principles immediately to climb multipitch! The course of highly worth it and made our climbing trip so much more meaningful. He is very experienced and knowledgeable, plus he shared plenty of Epic mountaineering stories. Would be glad to learn more from Alex in the future! Thanks Alex!!!!Posted on Google![]()

I traveled to Denver from Japan for a business trip and hoped to climb one of Colorado’s 14ers while I was there. After searching online, I found American Mountain School and was very lucky to be guided by Alex. Because I had not climbed on snow for quite a long time, and because my equipment was not fully adequate for the conditions, I was honestly a little anxious. However, thanks to Alex’s great experience, calm judgment, and thoughtful support, I was able to reach the summit safely and return without problems. Climbing at an altitude that we do not have in Japan, with some remaining snow, became one of the best memories of my trip. Thank you very much, Alex.Posted on Google![]()

TLDR; Great experience. My friend Jim and I hired Alex to take us out for a Lead Ice Climbing class. Alex was very friendly, easy to learn from, and had tons of great tips and tricks from years of high end mountain climbing in the greater. Jim and I got a lot of practice placing screws as well as building anchors and v-threads. We left really pleased and stoked. I would recommend Alex and AMS for any skills you need for you future adventures!Posted on Google![]()

Everything I wanted in an ice lead class. The automatic emails and the website need some work, but that's near irrelevant to the instruction and material covered in session.Posted on Google![]()

I had an amazing experience with American Mountain School during my ice climbing class. My instructor, Alexander, was excellent — very knowledgeable, confident, and incredibly patient, which immediately made me feel more comfortable and confident myself. As someone who is just getting into mountaineering and has a mountaineering course coming up soon, this class was very eye-opening. Alexander not only made the experience fun and safe, but he also took the time to share helpful advice and equipment suggestions for my future training. I really appreciated how willing he was to help even beyond the class itself — you can truly tell he loves what he does. I’m from South Texas where everything is flat, so Colorado and ice climbing were completely new to me. I was slower on the approach, but Alexander was patient and encouraging the entire time. Thanks to his guidance, I built the confidence to climb and made it all the way to the top — something I honestly didn’t think I could do at first. I would absolutely book another class with him in the future and highly recommend both Alexander and American Mountain School to anyone looking to learn or build confidence in the mountains.
This 4-day Glacier Peak climbing trip is scheduled with Colorado residents in mind! Our itinerary is designed so you can take an early morning flight from Denver to Seattle on Day 1 (departing around 6:00 AM), allowing you to join the team in Washington by mid-morning. We’ll wrap up the adventure in time for you to catch an evening flight back to Denver at approximately 6:00 PM on Day 4. This schedule lets you maximize your time on the mountain without needing extra travel days. Please confirm flight times and book early to secure your spot on this seamless round-trip adventure!
Our 4-day guided climb of Glacier Peak takes you deep into the Glacier Peak Wilderness — one of the most remote and least-traveled volcanoes in the Cascade Range. Unlike the more accessible peaks nearby, Glacier Peak requires a serious multi-day approach through old-growth forest and alpine meadows before reaching the glaciated upper mountain. This trip is built for climbers with prior mountaineering or glacier travel experience who want a genuine wilderness expedition, real solitude, and a summit that few climbers ever stand on. Our guides will lead your team through glacier travel, crevasse navigation, and a summit push to the top at 10,541 feet.
Day 1 — Arrival & Approach
Meet your guide at the North Fork Sauk Trailhead (2,100 ft) mid-morning. Hike ~5 miles through old-growth forest along the Sauk River to camp at Mackinaw Shelter (2,900 ft).
Day 2 — Into the Alpine
Climb steeply out of the valley over White Pass (5,900 ft) and into the high alpine terrain near Glacier Gap. Set up high camp at approximately 7,300 ft (~8.75 miles).
Day 3 — Summit Day
An early alpine start to climb the glaciated upper mountain via the standard route, navigating crevasses as a rope team to reach the summit (10,541 ft). Return to high camp the same day.
Day 4 — Descent & Departure
Break camp and descend the full ~13.75 miles back to the trailhead. Transport to Sea-Tac Airport for an evening flight home.
The standard route on Glacier Peak follows the Sitkum/Cool Glacier line, approached via White Pass and Glacier Gap. The route involves sustained glacier travel with crevasse crossings, requiring rope team travel, crampon use, and self-arrest skills. There is no technical rock climbing involved, but the remoteness and length of the approach make this a more demanding objective than many other Cascade volcanoes. The route lies within the Glacier Peak Wilderness, and a wilderness permit is required (self-issued at the trailhead).Tab Content

Your guide will meet you at the North Fork Sauk Trailhead in the Glacier Peak Wilderness. We recommend renting a car at Sea-Tac Airport (SEA) upon arrival on Day 1 — this gives you full flexibility for the ~2.5-3 hour drive (~110 miles) north to the trailhead via the Mountain Loop Highway and Forest Road 49. Note: the final ~6.6 miles on FR-49 are unpaved and can be rough — a vehicle with reasonable ground clearance is recommended.
Please plan to arrive at the trailhead no later than 3:00 PM on Day 1. Your guide will contact you in advance of the trip to confirm the exact meeting time and location.

A high level of physical fitness is required. This is a longer and more remote objective than many other Cascade volcanoes — expect sustained hiking with a 40+ pound backpack over multiple days, including a long summit day. Strong cardiovascular endurance and leg strength are essential.
Yes. This is an Intermediate-level trip designed for climbers who already have glacier travel experience, including crampon use, ice axe self-arrest, and roped glacier travel. This is not an introductory course — if you’re new to mountaineering, we recommend our Mount Baker trip first.
Day 1 and Day 4 involve 5-13.75 miles of hiking depending on pace. Summit day (Day 3) is the longest and most demanding, typically 10-14 hours round trip from high camp, including glacier travel and crevasse navigation.
We camp in tents for the duration of the trip — one night near Mackinaw Shelter and one or more nights at high camp near Glacier Gap. All camping gear must be carried in; we teach proper wilderness camping practices for multi-day glacier expeditions.
You’ll need to bring your own food, including snacks and dehydrated meals for 4 days. We provide boiling water and group cooking equipment. A packing/food guide is included.
Conditions can change quickly at elevation. Expect sun, wind, and possible snow even in summer, with temperatures dropping significantly at high camp and on summit day. We monitor conditions closely and adjust plans as needed.
No — this trip is rated Intermediate and requires prior glacier travel experience. Mountaineering is never 100% risk-free, and Glacier Peak’s remoteness and length make it a more serious undertaking than the more accessible Cascade volcanoes.
We recommend renting a car at Sea-Tac Airport (SEA) and driving to the North Fork Sauk Trailhead (~2.5-3 hours). Your guide will contact you before the trip to confirm the exact meeting time and location; plan to arrive no later than 3:00 PM on Day 1.
Our guides continuously assess conditions and will adjust the itinerary, delay the summit push, or descend early if needed to keep the team safe.
Yes — Glacier Peak Wilderness requires all human waste to be packed out (Wag Bags provided). This is a Forest Service requirement for this Wilderness area, not optional.
Yes, a self-issued wilderness permit is required at the trailhead — this is included as part of the trip logistics, but you’ll fill it out on arrival.
